The Decoy's Heart

Elise stared at the glowing screen of Julian's phone, the voice memo from her fiancé ringing in her ears. A web of affection and betrayal was tangling around her, and she suddenly had no idea who was the victim and who was the villain.

The smell of roasted espresso beans suddenly made Elise feel violently ill. She sat in the corner booth of the dimly lit cafe, staring down at the glowing screen of Julian’s unlocked smartphone. Julian was at the counter, chatting amiably with the barista as he waited for their lattes, completely unaware that his phone had just shattered Elise’s reality.

It had started innocently enough. Julian had asked her to queue up a new playlist while he grabbed the drinks, giving her his passcode without a second thought. But as Elise swiped to open the music app, a banner notification had dropped down from Simon, her fiancé of three years. The text read: 'Did you listen to the voice note? Just stick to the plan. Two more weeks.'

Curiosity, fueled by weeks of Simon’s bizarre, distant behavior, had gotten the better of her. Elise had tapped the message, opening their chat log, and pressed play on the audio file Simon had sent that morning.

Simon’s voice, cold and exhausted, had filtered through the small speaker: 'Keep her distracted, Julian. Two more weeks and she's out of my hair. I just need to finalize the paperwork before she finds out.'

Elise’s hands shook as she placed the phone face-down on the wooden table. For the past month, Simon had been a ghost. He left for work before she woke, came home long after she was asleep, and spent his weekends locked in his home office or running mysterious 'errands.' She had felt entirely abandoned, nursing a quiet, festering heartbreak.

And then there was Julian. Simon’s charismatic, thoughtful best friend had conveniently stepped in to fill the void. He had offered to help her with wedding planning, taken her out for dinners when Simon canceled, and spent hours listening to her fears. To Elise’s deep shame, she had found herself leaning into Julian’s warmth. She had caught herself looking forward to his texts, feeling a dangerous, electric spark whenever his hand brushed hers. She had agonized over her own guilt, wondering if she was a terrible person for developing feelings for another man while her fiancé drifted away.

But now, staring at the phone, a horrifying new narrative locked into place. Was she the villain for catching feelings, or was she the victim of a cruel game? Was Simon trying to dump her, using his best friend to keep her busy while he legally untangled their lives? And was Julian merely a hired distraction, faking every smile, every deep conversation, and every lingering look?

Julian returned to the table, carefully setting down two ceramic mugs. He slid into the booth opposite her, his green sweater catching the warm amber light of the cafe. He offered her that easy, comforting smile she had come to rely on.

"Caramel macchiato, extra foam," Julian said, pushing the mug toward her. Then he noticed her face. His smile faltered. "Elise? What's wrong? You look pale."

Elise pushed his phone back across the table. "Keep me distracted? Was this all a joke for Simon?"

Julian’s eyes darted to the screen. The color instantly drained from his cheeks. He reached for the phone, his mouth opening and closing as he scrambled for words. "Elise, stop. You weren't supposed to hear that."

"I wasn't supposed to hear that my fiancé is paying you to babysit me so he can get me 'out of his hair'?" she demanded, her voice trembling but rising in volume. "What is the paperwork, Julian? Is he evicting me from our apartment? Breaking off the engagement?"

"No! It's not what you think, I swear," Julian pleaded, reaching across the table to grab her hand.

Elise pulled away as if she had been burned. "Who's playing who, Julian? Have you been laughing at me this whole month? Watching me cry over him while you report back?"

"Elise, please, let me explain—"

But she didn't wait. Elise grabbed her coat and stormed out of the cafe, the cold autumn wind whipping against her tear-stained cheeks. Her mind raced with a frantic need for the truth. She needed to see the paperwork Simon had mentioned. She needed to know exactly how much of a fool she had been.

Instead of going home, Elise hailed a taxi straight to Simon’s downtown architectural firm. She knew he was out on a site visit, giving her the perfect window. Using her spare keycard, she slipped into his private office.

Her eyes immediately landed on a thick, manila folder sitting dead center on his immaculate glass desk. The label read: 'Relocation - E.V.' Elise Vance.

Her breath caught in her throat. She opened the folder. Inside were lease termination agreements for their current downtown loft, effective at the end of the month. Beneath that was a massive wire transfer receipt, draining almost the entirety of Simon’s personal savings account. The final document was a property deed, but she didn't even read the address. The truth seemed agonizingly clear. He was draining his accounts to hide his assets, canceling their lease, and moving on without her.

Elise felt a hollow, crushing weight in her chest. She had spent weeks feeling guilty for her wavering loyalty, entirely unaware that the man she loved had already discarded her.

She left the office and returned to their apartment. Moving with numb efficiency, she pulled her suitcase from the closet and began throwing her clothes inside. If he wanted her out of his hair in two weeks, she would do him a favor and be gone tonight.

She was zipping up the final bag when the front door unlocked. Heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway.

"Elise?" Simon called out. He appeared in the bedroom doorway, still wearing his dusty work boots, his face lined with exhaustion. A second later, Julian appeared behind him, panting heavily as if he had run all the way up the stairs.

Simon looked from Elise’s tearful face to the packed suitcase on the bed. "What are you doing? Julian called me, he said you heard a voice note... Elise, wait."

"I'm saving you the trouble," Elise spat, her voice thick with betrayal. "I went to your office, Simon. I saw the relocation folder. I saw the lease termination. You didn't have to hire your best friend to babysit me while you kicked me out!"

Simon froze. He looked back at Julian, panic flashing in his eyes, before turning back to Elise. "You went to my office? Did you... did you read the property deed?"

"I didn't need to read the address of your new bachelor pad!" Elise cried, the tears finally spilling over. "I thought I was the terrible person! I felt so guilty because you were so cold, and Julian was actually there for me. I started to lean on him. I thought I was ruining our relationship, but you were already throwing me away!"

Silence fell over the room. The confession of her growing feelings for Julian hung in the air, heavy and sharp.

Julian looked down at his shoes, his jaw tight.

Simon didn’t look angry. Instead, the deep lines of exhaustion on his face seemed to soften into an expression of profound sorrow. He slowly walked over to his briefcase, popped the latches, and pulled out the very manila folder Elise had seen earlier.

"I didn't buy a bachelor pad, Elise," Simon said softly, his voice cracking. He pulled out the property deed and handed it to her.

Elise hesitated, then looked down through her tears. The address printed at the top of the deed made her heart stop.

*42 Rosewood Lane.*

It was her late grandmother’s house. The sprawling Victorian home where Elise had spent her childhood, the one her family had lost to foreclosure ten years ago.

"The bank was quietly putting it up for auction," Simon explained, taking a tentative step toward her. "I found out two months ago. I had to outbid a developer who wanted to tear it down. I drained my savings, I took on three extra freelance projects, and I’ve been spending every night over there fixing the foundation and repainting the porch so it would be perfect."

Elise stared at him, her entire body trembling as the truth washed over her.

"I needed to terminate our lease because we're moving in two weeks," Simon continued, a tear slipping down his own cheek. "I knew I was being a terrible fiancé. I knew I wasn't there for you. So I asked Julian to keep you company, to make sure you didn't feel entirely alone while I was killing myself to get this done in time for your birthday."

Elise dropped the papers, her hands flying to cover her mouth. She looked at Julian, who gave her a sad, gentle nod.

"He’s telling the truth, Elise," Julian said softly. He shoved his hands into his pockets, looking between the two of them. "Simon just wanted to give you the world. He asked me to be a friend. The problem was... I ended up wanting to be more than that. I should have stepped back when I felt the lines blurring. I'm sorry for making you feel like my affection was a lie. It wasn't. But you belong with him."

With a final, bittersweet smile, Julian turned and quietly walked out of the apartment, pulling the front door shut behind him.

Elise stood in the quiet bedroom, the realization of Simon's immense, sacrificial love breaking through the walls of her doubt. She ran to him, throwing her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder as she sobbed out apologies.

Simon wrapped his arms tightly around her, burying his face in her hair. "It's okay," he whispered, holding her as if he would never let go. "We're going home, Elise. We're finally going home."
